First Light is a center for homeless women and children in downtown Birmingham. For 15 years the program existed in the basement of First Presbyterian Church. In 1999 the Center purchased the old Granada Hotel, which had been ravaged by fire years earlier leaving only a concrete frame and the exterior brick. In addition to fully renovating the 20,000 square foot, four-story building, new stairs and an ADA compliant elevator were added, as well as an exterior courtyard for the residents.
