Indian Springs Science Center
Indian Springs, AL
Indian Springs School is a private boarding school located just outside Birmingham that enrolls 270 students in grades eight through twelve. ArchitectureWorks worked with the School to develop a new Master Plan, design New Dormitories and the Science Center.
The Science Center houses the biology, chemistry, physics and environmental science departments. Organized along a central corridor are flexible multi-use classrooms and offices. The corridor also serves as a display hall for artwork.
The building is sited for direct access to a creek and lake that serve as outdoor laboratories, allowing the students to experience real world applications of their studies. The building features passive and active sustainable design components including clerestory windows that flood natural light into the classrooms and a rainwater collection system used for irrigation of the greenhouse plants and the gardens nearby.
